Meals on Wheels, a program within Senior Action, works to provide hot, nutritious meals to individuals who are home-bound or unable to prepare food for themselves due to age, disability or illness. Their program provides delicious catered meals five days per week to individuals living within the city limits of Hastings.
Funding from the Hastings Community Foundation’s grant program helped keep the cost of meals low for their clients. Despite inflation and the rising costs of food, they have not raised the cost of meals since 2021.
“Keeping costs low is very important to us, as we know that our clients are struggling to make ends meet and we do not want them to sacrifice a nutritious meal for paying their bills,” said Debby Shuck, Executive Director of Senior Action. “Without local funds such as HCF grants, there would be many who could not afford our services and would go without the needed nutrition.”
They average 1300 meals per month and delivered by 200 volunteers. The volunteers are a combination of seniors and community members / businesses. A recent satisfaction survey showed 100% of the respondents indicated that receiving Meals on Wheels improves their ability to continue to live in their own homes.
