New equipment for a middle school afterschool program

The Zone is a free after school program for middle schoolers. The Zone, located in the YWCA’s Key Society Great Room, is conveniently located across the street from Hastings Middle School and is the only free program for middle schoolers in the city. They have a variety of different clubs such as cooking club, stem club, art club and our Teen Outreach Program. Their staff provides homework assistance, serves dinner, and creates a safe environment for students to hang out at afterschool.

Funding from the Hastings Community Foundation’s grant program paid for upgrade equipment to entertain students in grades sixth – eighth.

"The students have loved the new gaming systems, basketball hoop, and chargers for their laptops,” said Mackenzie Reinbold, the assistant director at the YWCA of Adams County. “We bought the equipment last spring and already this fall, the new Zone students love the space! The variety of activities allows every student to find something to do and have fun. The middle schoolers love having such a unique place to come to afterschool!"

Their average attendance for the 22-23 school year was 40 students a day. This year they have had highs of almost 90 students a day.  The Zone is open from 3:30 to 6:00 Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and 2:30 to 6:00 on Wednesdays.
